When Camp meets Culture

Coming to Norway, a country far away from our own country Brazil, we have discovered a lot of new things about ourselves and international work. We are Taís and Ester, international students from Brazil interested in getting to know different cultures and how people can relate with each other in various kinds of environments. Together with the Norwegian Mission Society (NMS), we are able to deal with this in a practical way in our daily life at our job.

This year we had the opportunity to live in Norway and experience how leadership is developed in the NMSU camps that we have been to (NMSU is the youth organization of NMS). We are in a culture, different from our own, and that reflects also how camps are organized here: In some ways very different from our home. Our sending organization “Movimento Encontrão” does a great job with preparing leaders for the future. This matches to what we have experienced with NMSU here in Norway: The camps for children are about preparing future leaders.

Developing young leaders

We are together with young people who seek development in several areas, such as for instance leadership. For us it is a great opportunity to be part of NMSU and to help the leaders to organize the camps. Being leaders gives us a great vision of how the camps are held, from activities to devotions. Everything is well organized and balanced according to the purpose of each camp.

“Camps have always been a part of our lives, and even after we were above the age limit to keep attending, we started to help as leaders. ”

Some of the camps we went where focused on mission, including mission in Brazil. We had the opportunity to talk about our home country a few times. It was a very interesting experience to share how we live in Brazil to the kids at these camps on the other side of the ocean. Camps have always been a part of our lives, and even after we were above the age limit to keep attending, we started to help as leaders. We believe that many of the children we meet in NMSU camps will be leaders one day as well.

Take ideas back to Brazil

We will definitely take some ideas of how to present mission to children to the camps we attend in Brazil. The mission around the world is presented in a very entertaining way, with lots of information and cultural experiences. The children's attention is caught by the new curiosities about a country that they did not know well. Thus, besides discovering a new country and its beauties, they learn about the work of NMS in these countries and that one day they too can be part of it.

“The mission around the world is presented in a very entertaining way, with lots of information and cultural experiences.”

It’s so nice that NMS is doing mission in so many countries, so young people who attend the camp have the opportunity to travel around the globe just from the stories and experiences of leaders who have helped in or come from the countries NMS supports. It is amazing to be able to share these international experiences, and what is happening in different corners of the world.

We acknowledge that being here and working through our skills and capacities, is challenging, but we have the certainty that this is what we should be part of.
